A Point is an indicator. It can indicate many things including a beginning, end, or any position in space. A point has no dimension, no geometry and only shows location.
This diagram takes a simple organic light fixture and indicates the location of the lights using points. The points in this break down the shapes into simple forms and can be used as a basis for another diagram.
When the points are enlarged they can serve a new purpose like I have done in this diagram. This could be taken and used in a number of ways such as spatial relationships, motifs, or other abstractions.
A line always begins at a point. The point is extended into any direction and becomes a line. A line can be formed by the movement of a point and can be straight or curved. Lines have length and a fixed position.
This image highlights the use of line in an interior. A line can be repeated and create rhythm and visual interest within a space. This demonstrates lines going in many directions and with varying lengths.
This diagram takes the line that was used in the architectural shot and creates a motif. This diagram simplified the lines and creates a beginning of a greater design. This could be used in planning architectural design or in creating a parti.
When a number of lines are connected using shared points, it creates a plane. A plane is a closed 2D shape that has length and width. A plane has a fixed position that is measurable. A Plane creates a surface in which all else is based on.
This home has some amazing planar architecture. This features great use of oversized planes to create a beautiful and dramatic architecture. The surfaces are clean and straight. The subtle contrast in scale of the two planes adds visual interest to this architecture.
This example demonstrated the possibilities that planes open up. Upon repeating the plannar forms that the architecture created, I was able to create an interesting diagram that inspires many possibilities when it comes to form. The slight perspective of the planes intrigues the eye.
Volume is created when planes come together and create a closed 3-dimensional shape. Then a plane is extended and molded into new positions it creates a shape that has length, width, and depth. Volume has a fixed position and has a defines space.
In this kitchen the island in the center of the space has volume. The planes that make up the island are clearly connected and have a set length, depth, and width. The island created a seemingly long and stretched form with a great volume.
When diagramming the form created in the previous image there are seemingly endless possibilities. This diagram plays with the perspective created and uses the same form but flipped and repeated. The diagram created is visually interesting yet simple. This could be representative of spacial plans leading to a destination or focal point.
I like how you layout different diagrams in consistent way. I think it looks neat and very professional. You clearly did nice job with explanation. I love the color that you used to identify the different aspects of point, line, plane and volume.
ReplyDeleteI love your choice of image and how clearly you explained everything. The black borader and the grey background you used for the diagrams really make the whole thing stand out and creates a sense of unity with the design of your blog.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your overall layout. Very professional and neat! Everything is very clear and your diagrams are very easy to read. Perfection Tommy!
